Consumer General Directorate tips and care for Black Friday.

According to Notícias ao Minuto, in the campaign "Compare prices and consider your purchase - The decision is yours!", the DGC appeals to consumers' attention about possible deceptive practices during this promotional period. The entity reminds that, by law, promotional prices "must reflect a real discount on the lowest price practiced in the last 30 days in the same store".

Then, the DGC advises consumers to:

  • Compare prices of the same product in different stores.
  • Use price comparison tools.
  • Ensure purchasing decisions are informed;

Additionally, it reinforces that "false advertising 'is prohibited and punishable' by law," reads the news.

The entity also warns about recurring tactics during Black Friday, such as:

  • Pressure for urgency, inducing rushed decisions;
  • Fraudulent stores that replicate the identity of official stores.
  • Deceptive links sent via email, text messages, or social media.

In the news, it can also be read that, to promote responsible consumption, the DGC provides the following 7 main tips:

1. Check exchange and return policies before making a purchase.

2. Compare products and prices between different stores.

3. Check if the shipping costs make up for the advertised discount.

4. Evaluate if the use of credit cards justifies the purchase;

5. Ensure the security of online payment systems.

Confirm the identity and contact information of the seller;

Report sudden price changes to ASAE and DGC.

Black Friday, celebrated on the 4th Friday of November, is known for great discounts, but has expanded to promotions throughout the whole month.

In an effort to combat irregularities, in 2023, the DGC inspected advertising messages for 100 products from 20 economic operators, detecting three cases with suspected violations.

Therefore, the DGC reinforces the importance of informed decisions and caution during Black Friday promotions, encouraging respect for the rules to avoid practices that harm consumers.
